stay there in green aslkalon as long as you can (level 7 ?) get all the skills for your professions and have fun doing it
you will be solo and get all the drops
BE SURE to get the belt pouch for the 5scale fins as old ask is the only place to get it
save your gold and use your higher level to go through the early explorable areas after the academy fast and easy to grab more gold and salvage materials to craft better everything

I like your kittuns, they are cute!
Anyway, you can get better armor, but you must consider that the first area is just the tutorial. Once you get out into the wide world, there are plenty of things to get.

Man, I cant stand cats...
-They don't come when you call.
-Have you ever heard of a hunting cat?
-What about a squirrl cat?
-Cats are around when you don't want them.
-Cats are never around when you do want them.
-Unless it's a house cat they only come back to your house to eat and sometimes they MIGHT come to sleep.
-House cats * all over the place.
-If they are trained to go in the litterboxes, the first time they don't....you know how hard it is to get cat * smell outta anything?
-Did I mention theres no such thing as a hunting cat?
-Cats cant do tricks.
-All they do is lay around in the sun, be lazy, and take up oxygen.
-Cats dont play with YOU, they play with the toys you give them.
-Dogs>Cats
-Cats<Dogs
-Dogs would and could whoop any cat at any time in a fight.
Hmmm, thats just getting started too. Oh yea, one more thing about cats. Theres no such thing as a hunting cat.

Cats
Lovitar...the site must have been very busy. Do try again sometime. I have the 5 cats, 2 dogs. I also have my personal site at
http://www.geocities.com/louiseworld1949/ you can access my pet site from there. It is far more than just photos.
I find I can maneuver around in the game relatively accurately alternating mouse and keyboard, but when I have to follow another player or an NPC I am all over the board. It is very frustrating and I hated it when I had to go into catacombs and bump up against the walls. Then the person I was supposed to follow was long gone. (and soon dead) It is also rough when I have to follow at a run and heal someone and myself at the same time because my characters have to stop to do it and I get left behind again. I guess at 56 my reaction times are not too good. I got frustrated when the monk would get the artifact abnd I'd heal him and myself and he'd say, "We'd better hurry" but he'd just stand there and I'd try all sorts of things but he wouldn't budge...then he'd suddenly take off and leave me in the dust trying to get turned around.

I had the same kind of difficulties, Kaiwyn, plus an occasionally stuttering network connection, so I'd be dashing about and suddenly stop dead, pause for three (or more) seconds, and find myself smashed into a wall. Or in combat, be in the middle of beating the daylights out of something that was trying to beat the daylights out of me, freeze, and without warning the fight would be over and I or the beastie was dead. Alarming, to say the least, but nothing anybody can really do anything about.
I guess the best thing to do is to work with people you trust, and watch thier back as much as you need them to watch yours. ^_^

I guess i have figured out that as far as the tutorial area is concerned, being a Monk or taking Monk as a second skill is about the only way to get good healing spells.
Other than the belt pouch, which only has 5 slots, is there anything else I absolutely should get before I join the academy? I tried buying 2 belt pouches but it didn't work....AND I lost my scale fins.
So far using an Identifying kit has cost me much more than if I just rendered the stuff down to base elements and sold it. Identifying really doesn't do anything as far as I can see except perhaps give you a few gold more...but one has to weigh the cost of the Identifying kit.
I have tried clicking on the person I am following...but perhaps the connection severs when you try to heal them. Wish I could heal on the run because they are long gone by the time I finish the spell.
Tried entering the academy as a Level 4 ranger/monk.....bad move! By the time I figured out what was going on I was killed and about to be killed again! had to delete character and re-create her. She is now a level 5 and I am nowhere near ready to enter the academy. Besides finding myself a bit overwhelmed in there, I have been finding more stuff to do in old Ascalon.

...unless you're a monk as your primary. but then you have limited ability to do anything else. ^_^ You do have a few attack spells, and they're not too shabby, but don't make the mistake you can go up against the entire Mongol Hordes as a simple monk.

I have no idea about those two "bag" slots, but what I found most useful was the salvage kit. The items you get from a salvaging will stack so you can have 10+ items in one inventory slot, but items you pick up use their own space each time... I wasn't in a guild and, being a monk, a lot of the swords, hammers, axes and bows, etc. weren't of much use to me, but I can't let things stay on the ground. This means my inventory filled up DARN fast. With the salvage kit, I was able to get more or less the same price for the materials as the weapons, and hold a LOT more in my sack.

I found the ID kit to be of limited use... so I sold mine and haven't looked back.

I did the same thing with a Monk/Mesmer at level 6, and didn't get out until level 7. I'm not joking, that's what happened. They really need to balance that out for the careers, since a monk is not a combat charatcer they should perform a different task, like keeping an NPC alive for X amount of time or something.

As a Ranger Monk, do I HAVE to keep the stupid cat? It is way too undisciplined (LOL) Later I thought I might try to tame something else (like a bear maybe?) but for now the cat is using up all my healing abilities rushing into fights. I wouldn't mind if I had some control over him. I was considering selling him to the animal trainer but wasn't sure if I could enter the academy without a companion animal.

everybody
on the academy you can be killed in the pvp pard and continue on
then you can be killed in the following mission and exit the academy after the attack cutscene
id kit save for later (dont even buy it) use it for rares and return it same as salvage and expert salvage kits with 1 charge left for half price
EDIT
give the cat to the animal person
you do not need a pet they are optional
the bear has break charm so no so far
